District Health Board
The District Health Board in Northland is the Northland DHB. They are responsible for providing, or funding the provision of, health and disability services for the people of Northland.
The district health board covers a large geographical area from Te Hana in the south to Cape Reinga in the north. They contract local health providers to make services available to the public.
There are four hospitals in the Northland region:
- Whangarei hospital
- Bay of Island hospital
- Dargaville hospital
Hokianga Health Enterprise Trust is a charity offering a wide range of health services for those enrolled and living in the Hokianga area.
There are three private hospitals in Northland
St Johns Ambulance provide the local ambulance service. They are located in Ruakaka in Northland.
All dentists are registered with the Dental Council of New Zealand. Use their website to find a dentist near you.
Health Centres and doctors
Doctors (GPs) are fully trained medical doctors who can advise you on your health and refer you for further tests or specialist treatment if needed. GPs are registered with a Primary Health Organisation (PHO).

After hours healthcare is available through White Cross Accident and Medical Clinic on (09) 470 1083.
Kensington Pharmacy in Whangarei is open after hours.

Having a baby
There are various options available for giving birth in the Northern region. Check on the Ministry of Health website to see what is available in your area.
The Plunket Society (Plunket) offers information, support and developmental assessments of children at varying stages between birth and 5 years. They also organise car seat education services, parenting education and parenting groups. See the links below for services in your area.
Plunket also offers a free parent helpline and advice service available to all families and caregivers 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Call 0800 933 922 for parenting help.
Hospice is specialist care given to those with life-limiting illness. They provide hospice care in the region free of charge and in the setting of their choice.
